A quick scan on the internet with the different search engines on the keywords “Help with Java” and “Java Applets” will return thousands of pages containing scattered information which may or may not help you in getting the answers you are looking for on a specific Java related query. Unsurprisingly many of these pages simply contain a list of URLs which further point to yet more irrelevant websites, so what started out as a simple query to which you seek answer quickly turned into a fruitless search and a sheer frustrating experience of web hopping.

Central to Java is the creation of the different types of Java Applets. One of the strengths of the Java programming language lies in its ability to easily create programmes for the internet – and these programmes are known as Java Applets. Applets are run through an Appletviewer or from a web browser. They are flexible but yet very powerful programmes that run on a web page incorporating the display of a variety of graphics, sounds and accepting inputs from a user, hence adding high interactivity to a website. This is very different to the traditional application which essentially is a standalone programme that you run from the command line.

With any programming language, especially one that you have to use in conjunction with other scripting language or HTML tags, there are always the teething problems with using the correct syntax, methods, applet code or forgetting to upload resources an applet needs such as a text file, an image file or a class file sent in the appropriate formats. It can be an exhausting process sometimes trying to piece everything together to make a Java applet work the way you want it but once mastered, it could perform a myriad of tasks and functions, anything from basic calculations to the creation of highly interactive and powerful multi-media and animation based tools.

The more traditional way of getting targeted help in a specific area of Java programming through reference books may be an expensive option to many. The internet is still a very good source of reference materials if you know where to look. There are many websites that offer tutorials in very specific topics of Java which cater for the beginners as well as for the more advanced Java programmers. The Sun Developer Network offers a mountain of useful information on APIs, the latest products, downloads and Java technologies. There are many Java forums, newsgroups or online community groups where individuals come together to discuss about specific areas of Java. Forums are fast becoming a great tool for exchanging ideas and getting advice on a specific topic for the online community as more and more people gain access to the internet. Once your subscription to a forum is verified and activated, you can participate in the different threads or simply view current and past threads to obtain insights into the world of Java and beyond. Look out for those forums which have a high number of active users and posts that are current and recent. A well-structured forum should have clearly defined topic areas which allow you to quickly track down the appropriate threads and get the help you need. Also a good forum should have strict moderators or administrators who will ensure the smooth running of the forum and the removal of disruptive users and spams.
